In this notebook series for younger mystery listeners, the stories are a sort of prequel to the traditional Nancy Drew series. Nancy is 8 and getting her first puppy. Soon a variety of food thefts occur in the neighborhood, for which her puppy is blamed, and our sleuth is soon hot on the trail of the thief. Nancy Wu is a good reader, but her tone is sharp, and she gives Nancy a slight attitude that seems out of place. (Wasn't Nancy Drew, though sharp-witted, always kind?) Wu's youthful voice is very good at creating the young girls' voices in this story, though. So perhaps she is just reflecting an updated, edgier younger generation. J.C.G.
